In therapy, the first session for some therapist is dedicated to finding out why the client came to therapy and identifying what they would like to accomplish in their upcoming sessions. This is discussed over a number of sessions then a treatment plan if formulated. As a licensed therapist, this is what I was reminded of this morning listening to a YouTube pastor comparing the process of renewing the mind to that of a GPS tracking system. He said the first thing that needs to happen before you get to your destination is to identify where you are currently located. This analogy set off bells and whistles throughout my entire body as I was able to relate to this experience in my own scope of practice. In my sessions, before any treatment plan can be completed or any goals set, myself and the client must collaborate to gather an understanding of where they are right now then work forward.
For some, this is an easy task to work through as they have identified the areas they want to focus on and are ready for the challenge. They are open to the process no matter what because they have recognized, I need help I can’t do this on my own anymore. For others, this can be a tough feat. Why? Identifying the destination is easy, for most of us we know we want, where we want to go and what we want it to look like when we get there. Its figuring out the details on the way to the destination that gets tricky. We may not always like those directions; it might take too long. There may be times we are presented with a way that seems like a shorter distance, less waiting and preparation on that end, but it will never be as satisfying as the path that encourages patience and develops strength within the journey. I learned this the hard way. I wanted to start my own business many years ago, even as a little girl I knew I wanted to be a business owner. I didn’t know then exactly what business I wanted to start but I knew I didn’t want to work for someone else and I set out to accomplish that by any means necessary; unfortunately to my detriment. Needless to say, it took many years, wasted time and money, multiple bouts of depression and endless day of frustration before I said “I need help, I can’t do this anymore.” I sought after my God and with that I also sought a professional who specializes in self awareness and professional development. As a result I was able to recognize, there were thinking patterns and habits keeping me stuck in the same spot year in and year out. I wasn’t going anywhere! Just spinning my wheels in the same spot.
Proverbs 14:12 says, There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. The word death can be used figuratively or literally. In my case, my dreams were dying because I wasted so much time stuck in the same spot. Then there was a spiritual death as I grew further and further from the will of God chasing my own ambitions about how to get to the destination.
If you are experiencing stagnancy on the way to accomplishing a life goal, a task, a dream or just a simple objective. First, identify where you are located. Take some time to self reflect about where you are now. “What am I avoiding?” “What am I afraid of?” “Am I holding on to something I need to let go of?” There are plenty of exercises online for free that can help you get this started. Second, Formulate a plan to resolve any areas that may be hindering your progress. This may include going to therapy, getting a life coach, daily journaling for feelings expression, contacting your church for counseling and etc. And third, get on track. Once you have located yourself, get moving with the directions designed just for you. Discover your purpose, the gifts and talents that are connected to your passion. The journey won’t be perfect but it will be well worth it.
